In particular, it will tell you how big the Java heap really is when you run out of memory. If you use the -verbose:gc and -XX:+PrintGCDetails options, the GC might give you more clues as to what is happening. You can use the shell builtin 'ulimit' command to see if this has been done refer to "man ulimit" for details. It is also possible (but highly unlikely) that someone has set a process limit. Your application may really be using all of the 12g of heap that you've said it can use, and that is not enough. You can run "swapon -s" to see how much swap space is available / in use. If the amount of physical memory allocatable to user processes + the amount of swap space is less than the total virtual space used by processes the OS will start refusing requests by the JVM to expand the heap. Given that you have 24g of physical memory, you will need at least 8g (probably more) of swap space. For example if you have 2 processes with 15g of virtual memory each, that's 30gb. Most likely, the operating system is unable to give your JVM the memory it is asking for because there is not enough swap disk space. I can think of three possible explanations: Presumably, the CPU hanging at 100% is Java doing garbage collection. This is entirely outside the control of the JVM. Indeed, you would expect the RES number to move up and down as different processes' pages are swapped in and out by the OS virtual memory system.

It is not directly related to the size of your Java heap. The 8.4g reported by top as RES is the amount of physical memory that is currently being used to run the JVM. It is quite plausible for a 12g heap + the non-heap memory used/shared by the JVM to add up to 15g.

permgen space, code space, memory mapped files, etcetera. Java also needs memory for non-heap objects e.g. Rather it sets an upper limit on the size of the Java heap. The "-Xmx12288M" option does not reserve physical memory. Once it hits 8.4g, the CPU hangs at 100% (even though it's loading from disk), and eventually, I get Java's OutOfMemoryError. It is a bit of a time consuming process, but sometimes applications and programs can get corrupted in minor ways, and a reinstall can be all it takes to fix it.The odd part is that, according to 'top', it has 15.0g of VIRT(ual memory) and it's RES(ident set) is 8.4g.

I am not sure if you use any computer optimization products, such as iolo System Mechanic, but it might be worth something to look/invest into.Įdit: Also, I am not sure if you have tried, but it might also be worth while trying to uninstall, and install WoW again. I think at the end of the day it seems like somehow this file/setting was changed or your computer might have an underlying issue. I’d be curious to see if this fixes your issue, but I still find it odd that if nothing has changed recently you would start experiencing this. If you want a more thorough explanation towards exactly what might be going on and the fix, Microsoft has a document for that: *ivFEQ&ranSiteID=kXQk6.ivFEQ-xPKehW8cG_nZTuMN5Ov9A&epi=kXQk6.ivFEQ-xPKehW8cG_nZTuMN5Ov9A&irgwc=1&OCID=AID2000142_aff_7593_1243925&tduid=(ir_1a2pluu90kyklyigebaezkjgc32xjavoskq9m1vm00)(7593)(1243925)(kXQk6.ivFEQ-xPKehW8cG_nZTuMN5Ov9A)()&irclickid=_1a2pluu90kyklyigebaezkjgc32xjavoskq9m1vm00

The original poster came across a hurdle trying to solve his issue, and edited with a work around to that, too.

I would check out that link, it seems to be very similar to what issues you’re experiencing. Really, what I am finding online about issues similar to yours is related to the “paging file size.” I am not sure if or how exactly you might start getting this unless something changed recently on your computer, as far as hardware/software or possibly a configuration change. I will be honest, I know a lot less about computers than I do networks.
